History Christopher Columbus, a Catalan navigator who discovered America in 1492, arrived in this province, specifically Uvita Island, on September 18, 1502.



The name of the province is due to the fact that there was a small plantation of lemon trees, in front of the house of a tortoiseshell, rubber and bramble dealer who had established himself near Moín around the year 1840.



Limón was a sparsely populated area due to the attacks of mosquitoes and pirates during the colonial period. During that time it was inhabited by the indigenous groups Huetares, Suerres, Pococies. Its development began with the leasing of land by US companies seeking where to establish their banana areas.



The first population focus began with the escape of Indians to the high and inaccessible mountainous areas, an exodus that lasted until independence. Focus of Indians as has been said before, their first urban settlement began with the bringing of black slaves to the banana areas, it was believed that they were not going to stay long in the national territory so their studies were carried out with texts brought from Jamaica for which a variety of mixture of English, Spanish and French is still conserved in the Limonense coastal zone.







Limón is a province of Costa Rica, in the extreme east of the country. It limits to the north with the sister Republic of Nicaragua, to the northeast with the Caribbean Sea, to the west with Heredia, Cartago and San José, to the southwest with Puntarenas and to the southeast with Panama.

Limón is the pearl of the Costa Rican Caribbean. It is marked by a great cultural diversity: with a predominantly black population and with important features of the Costa Rican indigenous culture, the Afro-Caribbean, white and Chinese, each group brings its own style to the area. It is the area where more cultures converge than anywhere else in the Costa Rican territory.



It has a torrid climate with an average annual temperature of 25.5º C. The historical temperature marks in Limón are 13C and 35C. It is located about 209 km from San José. To the south of the province, in the Cordillera de Talamanca are the highest peaks of the country, among which the Chirripó hill stands out, the highest point of Costa Rican geography at 3,819 m above sea level and whose night temperature drops to less than zero degrees in the dry season, with a historical mark of 9 ° C below zero. In 1973 a brief snowfall was reported at its summit.





Caribbean Sea coast in Tortuguero, Limón It has the RECOPE oil refiner and several state institutions such as JAPDEVA located in its territory. It is a little industrialized area and is largely dedicated to agriculture. It has the largest banana production in the country that makes Costa Rica the second world exporter of the fruit. It suffered a devastating earthquake in 1991. Its port is the most important in Costa Rica and one of the largest container transit centers in Latin America.







Limón offers you 336 km of white sands, beaches and palm trees and exuberant national parks that protect tropical humid forests and coral reefs, as well as hundreds of species of flora and fauna in danger of extinction. The entire Caribbean coast of the country is located in this province.



Tortuguero National Park, located in this area, contains the largest sample of protected tropical humid forest and here you can explore its channels and rivers, observe flora and fauna, appreciate the nesting of sea turtles and have the opportunity to observe more than 300 species of birds, including the green macaw, peacock bass and toucans. Important scientific research is carried out in this area and it has become a special point for scientific and ecological tourism.



The place is also famous for the wide diversity of marine ecosystems, such as Cahuita, Puerto Viejo, Manzanillo, Isla Uvita, Punta Uva, Cocles and Gandoca-Manzanillo.



The carnivals of the city of Limón stand out as the most famous popular festival in the province, which are celebrated in October when the rainy season lowers the Caribbean climate regime.
