This Museum is a tribute to the Zacatecan artist Manuel Felgueréz, who has contributed to renewing the artistic proposal in Mexico, converging on the pioneer of abstract art in this country.
The museum was built in the center of the city of Zacatecas, in a 19th century building. This building was the headquarters of the Seminario Conciliar de la Purísima de Zacatecas, until 1914. Later, the building was used as a barracks and from 1964 to 1995 it was occupied as a criminal.
In 1997 the Government of the State of Zacatecas began the remodeling and conditioning of the space to install what would be the first stage of the Museum of Abstract Art. In the same way, Manuel Felgueréz and his wife donated the Museum to an important collection of the artist's work and a year later its inauguration as the author's museum.
In 1998 the first stage of the museum's permanent collection was presented, so the entire building was destined for the expansion of the museum.
The expansion works will continue until August 2001. The remodeling and restructuring of the building consists of combining the original architecture with modern elements. This is the result of a museum space of exceptional originality.
This museum has been constituted by a tangible testimony of one of the most significant aesthetic movements in the history of Mexican art of the 20th century and its current validity.
Currently the Museum of Abstract Art in the only room with the great collection of Felgueréz's work, a bell that also houses more than 120 Mexican artists who have made abstract painting and sculpture during the last 50 years.
In the different rooms of the Felguérez Museum you can find works that are at least three generations of artists dedicated to the production of painting and sculpture within the different trends of modern and contemporary abstraction.
