Santa Catarina Museum of Art is an art museum in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina.



The Santa Catarina Museum of Art (MASC) is an institution linked to the Santa Catarina Foundation of Culture (FCC) and is currently installed in the building of the Integrated Center for Culture (CIC), Avenida Gov. Irineu Bornhausen, no. 5600, Agronomic District, in the city of Florianópolis, State of Santa Catarina. Created by State Decree no. 433, of March 18, 1949 as Museum of Modern Art of Florianópolis (MAMF), has since been the official organ in the field of fine arts in our state.



It has a very interesting history at the national level because it was created in the 1940s, a period of cultural effervescence in Brazil. At that time, other art museums were created, such as the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP), and the Museum of Modern Art (MAM), in Rio de Janeiro.



In the record of the historical background of the creation of the MAMF - Museum of Modern Art of Florianópolis, can be considered the Circle of Modern Art - CAM, later known as Grupo Sul, due to the magazine with the name Sul edited for ten years by the Group. Formed by intellectuals, writers and young artists, concerned with shaking the city of Florianópolis, at the time conformed to the old standards. They worked in various areas of creation, such as literature, theater, cinema and the fine arts. Under the influence of this Group, the "Contemporary Art Exhibition" was brought to Florianópolis, together with the presence of its creator, the Rio de Janeiro writer Marques Rebelo (Eddy Dias da Cruz, 1907-1973). It was from this show, presented between September 25 and October 6, 1948, accompanied by lectures on contemporary art given by the writer, which created the current Santa Catarina Museum of Art.



The institution's initial collection has pieces by modernist artists such as Alfredo Volpi, Djanira Motta e Silva, Iberê Camargo, Emeric Marcier, Athos Bulcão, Portinari, among others.



The continued formation of the collection was basically through private and official donations. From 1985 a system of spontaneous donations was created by the artists who exhibited at the Museum. This gives it great regional importance. But it is also a representative collection of national and foreign artists.



During all these years the MASC has walked through several rooms, unhealthy and improper. Among them, the Santa Catarina House, which, when demolished, gave way to the building where the Santa Catarina State Public Library is located. Another headquarters was the old Customs building in Florianópolis. A bumpy trajectory, which includes the collection of the collection to a deposit at the Álvaro de Carvalho Theater.



With a collection of over 1,600 works from acquisitions and donations, the MASC is currently installed in an area of ​​1,980 m² in the building of the Prof. Henrique da Silva Fontes Integrated Culture Center, with a 1,440 m² hall, including the 340 m² Harry Laus Special Air-conditioned Room for exhibitions.



The Museum consists of the following Nuclei: Direction, Administrative, Conservation and Collection, Exhibition and Assembly, Art Education, Research, Documentation and Library.



The public has access to the Museum through permanent collections exhibitions, temporary exhibitions, library, monitored visitation programs, publications and technical advice.



The MASC has the support of the Advisory Board, to assist in various decisions concerning the programming of events and the analysis of the pieces for incorporation into the collection. It also has the services of the Atelier of Conservation and Restoration of Movable Cultural Goods - ATECOR, for technical advice to the collection. The Friends Association of the Santa Catarina Museum of Art - AAMASC provides conditions for increasing the performance of cultural activities.
