This museum was created by Decree No. 213 of April 17, 1984 of the Directorate of Libraries, Archives and Museums, having its antecedent in the former Regional Museum of the University of the North from where a large part of its collections come, especially archaeological .



It should also be noted that the buildings where the museum resides were handed over by the Regional Government of the time and definitively allocated by the Regional Ministerial Secretariat of National Assets.



It currently works in two buildings of historical value that have the character of National Monuments: The old Customs House and the former Maritime Government, both located in the Historic District, where the city of Antofagasta was born.

This museum has a heritage collection of about nine thousand pieces, including archaeological, historical and geological objects.
